Back Street Legend

Blog - Mohammad Kaif - Cricket Captain Legend - Mclaud Ganj - Dharamsala - Himachal Pradesh - India

Staying in Bhagsu in northern India, the life was good. Good as in fat and lazy. Most of my trip I stayed away from these 'famous' places but once in a long while, mainly to become anonymous again, blend in the crowds and taste some western foods I would check into one of the touristic loop destinations.

Well, this was such a time.

One day, I sat in the internet cafe working on editing a Tibetan massage clip from footage I took in the class I enrolled in, down in McLaud Ganj. The sun was setting outside and I would probably not even notice unless there was some unusual activity outside.

I stepped out and saw the neighboring grocery store owner, a peaceful man in his late 50's getting a bit more exited then usual and he was chatting with the internet cafe owner.

I asked what was is it about and they said that Mohammad Kaif had just passed by in the alley on his way down to the sacred spring that surfaces by the temple over there.

Obviously I had no clue who Mohammad Kaif is, however soon enough I realized that it is as if I do not know who my president is. Soon enough I learned he was the previous captain of the national cricket team.

The people gathering around were debating of weather to approach him and maybe get a photo with him, but it seemed they were hesitant.

I had a slow day and I guess I was up for some excitement, so I volunteered.

We waited in the dimly lit alley and after about 20 minutes someone came out of the dark and said that 'He is coming'.

I stepped forward and when I noticed the silhouette emerging from the night, I went closer and asked Mohammad (which I had to have pointed out first..) if I can take a photo with. He was easy with it and even chatted me up.

Well, that photo became the talk of the tailors and guest house workers, in other words my local friends (see the Dal Bati story posted here for the details).

And here comes the photoshop part....

Every one wanted a photo with Mohammad Kaif... so guess what we've done.

My friend Rais, showing here on the photo, was snapped, as you can see, at his tailor shop, then we had digitally blended him into the scene.

Another friend (seen here solo) asked to have his photo with Muhamad Kef and I took him the next night to another dark alley so we can take his photo in similar lighting, then we blended him into a photomontage of his own.

So now you too know who Mohammad Kaif is !
